The Virtuous Government of the Kakitsu Period

Japanese:
The Virtuous Government of the Kakitsu Period
The Muromachi Shogunate issued the Tokuseirei (decree of amnesty) in the autumn of 1441 (Kakitsu 1) in the wake of peasant uprisings. In June of that year, Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori was assassinated by Akamatsu Mitsusuke (the Kakitsu Rebellion), causing public turmoil, and in early September, peasants in the outskirts of Kyoto rose up in revolt. The rebels barricaded themselves in various shrines and temples, demanding amnesty, and the Shogunate finally gave in, issuing the Tokuseirei on September 12. However, disputes continued to arise over the interpretation of the Tokuseirei, and so on leap September 10, a new law was issued clarifying the scope of its application.
