Aeba Koson

Novelist and theater critic. His real name was Yozaburo. He was known by other pseudonyms such as Takenoya Shujin. He was born in Edo. He joined the Yomiuri Shimbun in 1874 (Meiji 7). He was later recognized by Takabatake Ransen and became an editor and reporter. He played a pioneering role in the revival of Genroku literature in the early 1880s with his breakthrough work "Tosei Akiudokatagi" (1886), the short stories "Hito no Uwasa" (1886) and "Yabu no Tsubaki" (1887), as well as "Lotus Leaf Girl" (1887), which was modeled on Ihara Saikaku's "Amorous Life of a Woman." In addition to the 20-volume collection of his works "Muratake," he also published "Takenoya Drama Criticism Collection," and his collection of essays and critiques "Suzumeodori" is a must-read for Edo literature research. He was a central figure in the literary group (Negishi school) that lived in Negishi and Yanaka.

小説家、劇評家。本名与三郎。別号竹の屋(舎)主人など。江戸生まれ。1874年(明治7)読売新聞社に入社。のち高畠藍泉(らんせん)に認められて編集記者となる。出世作『当世商人気質(とうせいあきうどかたぎ)』(1886)、短編『人の噂(うわさ)』(1886)、『藪(やぶ)の椿(つばき)』(1887)などのほか、井原西鶴(さいかく)の『好色一代女』に倣った『蓮葉(はすは)娘』(1887)などによって、明治20年代初頭の元禄(げんろく)文学復興の先駆的役割を果たした。作品集『むら竹』全20巻のほか、『竹の屋劇評集』があり、また随筆評論集『雀躍(すずめおどり)』は江戸文学研究のための必読書である。根岸、谷中(やなか)に住む文学グループ(根岸派)の中心的存在であった。
