...The name is common to the Slavs and has ancient origins, but in Russia it refers to a plucked stringed instrument of the zither family similar to the Finnic kantele. The zhaleika is a single-reed instrument, so named because it produces a sharp, wailing sound (zhalet' means to mourn or pity).
