The company was founded in 1887 as Nagase Shoten. The Kao trademark has been around since then. After World War II, the company was one of the first to produce synthetic detergents, and is the leading company in Japan for soaps, detergents, and laundry treatments. The company also produces cosmetics, industrial oil products, and plasticizers. The company is renowned in the industry for its advanced product development and distribution strategies. Recently, the company has been accelerating its expansion into Asia, particularly China. In 2006, the company acquired Kanebo Cosmetics. Headquarters in Tokyo, factories in Wakayama, etc. Capital in 2011 was 85.4 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 1,186.8 billion yen.
