Kosei Line

Japanese: 湖西線 - こせいせん
Kosei Line

The name of the track of West Japan Railway Company that runs along the west shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. The 74.1 km section between Yamashina and Omi-Shiotsu is double tracked throughout. Direct current electrification (alternating current electrification between Omi-Shiotsu and Nagahara). It was built with high-standard structure in response to the demand for faster conventional lines. It is a trunk line that shortens the distance between the Keihanshin area and the Hokuriku Main Line, and many direct express trains from the Keihanshin area to Hokuriku, Niigata, and Tohoku use this line. It also functions as a commuter railroad to the Keihanshin area. Construction began in 1967, and the entire line opened in 1974. The Kojaku Railway, which previously operated between Hamaotsu and Omi-Imazu, was closed in 1969, and most of the track land was sold to the Japanese National Railways (JNR) for the construction of the Kosei Line. In 1987, following the privatization of Japanese National Railways, it became part of West Japan Railway Company.
