naos

…In Greek and Roman temples, the term used to refer to the main part of the temple, as separated by a wall from the surrounding colonnade. It is often used synonymously with the Greek word naos, which is the sanctuary, or main room of the temple where the statue of the god was placed. However, strictly speaking, it also includes the pronaos (portico, antechamber) and the opisthodomos (back portico, rear room) in addition to the naos.
