Ashikaga Mitsutada

Japanese:
Ashikaga Mitsutada

A military commander in the mid-Muromachi period. Also read as "Mitsunao." Sasagawa Gosho. Son of the second Kamakura kubo Ujimitsu and younger brother of the third Mitsukane. In 1399 (Oei 6), he went down to Sasagawa, Asaka County, Mutsu Province (Sasagawa, Asaka Town, Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture), and together with Inamura Gosho Mitsusada, he played a part in the Kamakura government's control of southern Oshu. Ten documents issued to the Yuki Shirakawa clan and others around 1429 (Eikyo 1) remain, and from these, it can be seen that he exercised authority equivalent to that of the Oshu Kanrei. In 1416 (Oei 23) during the Uesugi Zenshu Rebellion, he sided with Uesugi Ujinori (Zenshu) and Ashikaga Mitsutaka, and since then he acted independently, opposing the Mochi clan, opposing Mitsusada, and being pro-Shogunate. In June 1440 (Eikyo 12), during the Battle of Yuki by Ishikawa clan and others, he was attacked by local lords from southern Oshu who sided with Yuki, and died at Shinokawa.
