German medical scientist. Born in Barmen (now Wuppertal) near Düsseldorf, he studied surgery under Johann von Mikulicz-Radecki (1850-1905) at the University of Breslau (now Wrocław). He reported new findings in detail on differences in intrathoracic pressure, making it possible to perform surgical operations inside the thoracic cavity, pioneering the new field of thoracic surgery. In 1910, he became a full professor at the University of Zurich, transferred to the University of Munich in 1918, and then to the University of Berlin in 1927.

ドイツの医学者。デュッセルドルフ近くのバルメン(現，ブッパータール)に生まれ，ブレスラウ(現，ブロツワフ)大学でミクリチ･ラデツキーJohann von Mikulicz‐Radecki(1850‐1905)について外科学を修めた。胸腔内圧の差異について詳しく新知見を報告し，胸腔内の外科手術操作を可能にして胸部外科という新分野を開拓した。1910年チューリヒ大学の正教授に就任，18年ミュンヘン大学，27年ベルリン大学に転じた。
