…It means “City on the Volga River” and was called Tsaritsyn (meaning “City of the Empress”; however, it was a Russian interpretation of the Tatar place name Saryi-Su (Yellow Water)) until 1925, and Stalingrad until 1961. It is a key point of land and sea transportation and a major industrial center, with various industries such as machine manufacturing, construction materials, food, wood processing, metallurgy, oil refining, and non-ferrous metals thriving.
