In addition to this, he produced many popular works in a wide range of fields, including the film adaptation of Sinclair Lewis' best-selling novel The Peacock (1936), the film adaptation of Sidney Kingsley's hit stage play The Dead End (1937), the film adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights (1939), the film adaptation of Somerset Maugham's novel The Letter (1940), and literary films such as The False Garden (1941), a film adaptation of Lillian Hellman's stage play The Little Foxes, as well as the masterpiece Western The Western Man (1940). The person who played the most important role in shaping Wyler's "style," a perfectionist as he was, was cameraman Gregg Toland (1909-48, also known as the cameraman for Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane"), who collaborated with him on many of his films after "The Three Men."
