Kleingarten

…In recent years, their productive role has diminished, and they have become important urban green spaces in Western Europe as places of health and recreation for city residents. In the UK, they are called allotments (allotment gardens), and in Germany, Kleingarten. In Japan, in the 1930s, Oizumi Community Gardens, Hazawa Park Subdivision Seed Garden, and Johoku Park Farm in Osaka were established as part of a home gardening movement using fallow land, but they disappeared after the war as food conditions improved and vacant land decreased.
