Osaka Loop Line

The name of the track of the West Japan Railway Company. The Osaka-Taisho-Tennoji-Kyobashi-Osaka section is 21.7 km long (1.0 km between Shin-Imamiya and Tennoji overlaps with the Kansai Main Line). The entire line is double tracked and electrified with direct current. It is a circular line that circles the Osaka city area. The history leading up to the completion of the circular line is complicated. The Osaka-Tamatsukuri-Tennoji section was opened by the Osaka Railway in 1895 (Meiji 28), and after merging with the Kansai Railway, it was nationalized in 1907 (Meiji 40) and called the Joto Line. The Osaka-Nishi-Kujo section was opened in 1898 as part of the Nishinari Railway, and was also nationalized in 1907 and became the Nishinari Line (Osaka-Sakurajima). The Joto and Nishinari lines were electrified in 1933 (Showa 8) and 1941, respectively, and began electric train service, but they were separate operating systems. Later, in order to ease traffic congestion in the north-south direction in Osaka, the Nishikujo-Tennoji section was electrified and opened in 1961, and the Joto and Nishinari lines were combined to form the Osaka Loop Line. However, Japan's second endless loop operation was not implemented until 1964, pending the completion of the elevated track at Nishikujo Station. The Nishinari Line's Nishikujo-Sakurajima section, along with its freight branch, became an independent line called the Sakurajima Line. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, it became part of the West Japan Railway Company. Following the opening of Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in 2001, Universal City Station was opened as the nearest station, and the Sakurajima Line was given the nickname "JR Yumesaki Line."

西日本旅客鉄道の線路名称。大阪―大正―天王寺(てんのうじ)―京橋―大阪間21.7キロメートル（新今宮―天王寺間1.0キロメートルは関西本線と重複）。全線複線、直流電化。大阪市街部を一周する環状線である。環状線完成に至るまでの歴史は複雑で、大阪―玉造(たまつくり)―天王寺間は1895年（明治28）、大阪鉄道によって開業、関西鉄道への併合を経て、1907年（明治40）国有化、城東(じょうとう)線と称された。また、大阪―西九条間は、1898年西成(にしなり)鉄道の一部として開業、同じく1907年国有化、西成線（大阪―桜島間）となった。城東、西成両線はそれぞれ1933年（昭和8）および1941年に電化されて、電車運転を開始したが、運転系統は別個であった。その後、大阪における南北方向の交通混雑を緩和するため、西九条―天王寺間が新たに1961年（昭和36）電化開業し、城東、西成線をあわせて大阪環状線とした。ただし、日本で2番目のエンドレス環状運転は西九条駅の高架工事完成を待って、1964年から実施されている。なお、西成線の西九条―桜島間は、その貨物支線とともに桜島線として独立した。1987年、日本国有鉄道の分割民営化により、西日本旅客鉄道に所属。桜島線は2001年（平成12）にユニバーサル・スタジオ・ジャパン（USJ）の開業に伴い、最寄り駅としてユニバーサルシティ駅が開設されたのとともに「JRゆめ咲線」の愛称がつけられた。
