Moonflower (Epiphyllum oxypetalum; Dutchman's-pine)

A species closely related to the peacock cactus that grows wild from Mexico to South America. The stems are flat and well-branched. The pure white flowers are about 12 cm in diameter and 20-30 cm long. They begin to bloom around 8 p.m., releasing a fragrant scent, and wilt by morning at the latest. They bloom 3-4 times between June and October. The flowers can be used as ingredients in tempura and soups, and have a slimy texture and a faint scent on the tongue. They can be easily propagated by cuttings. Plant in well-drained soil, and give plenty of water and fertilize during the growing season from spring to summer. In winter, keep the temperature indoors at 8°C or higher and on the dry side.
