Consider the problem (calculus of variations) of minimizing the value of when y = y ( x ) is an unknown function and a function F ₍ x , y , y ') of x , y , y ' is given. However, the _unknown function y ( x ) satisfies _the boundary conditions y ( x0 ) = y0 , y ( x1 ) = y1 . Now, consider the family of functions Yε ( _x ) = y ( x ) + εz ( x ₎ with any function z ( x ) that is 0 at _the endpoints x0 , x1 and parameter ε. _If y ( x ) is the function that gives the minimum value of Z [ y ], then the function Z [ Yε ] of _ε will be minimum for ε=0.

y＝y(x)が未知関数であって，x,y,y′の関数F(x,y,y′)が与えられているとき，の値を最小にする問題(変分法)を考える。ただし，未知関数y(x)は境界条件y(x₀)＝y₀,y(x₁)＝y₁をみたすものとする。いま，端点x₀,x₁で0になる任意の関数z(x)とパラメーターεとをもって，関数族Y_ε(x)＝y(x)＋εz(x)を考えると，y(x)がZ[y]の最小値を与える関数ならば，εの関数Z[Y_ε]はε＝0に対して最小になる。
