Hirotari Nakajima

A Japanese classicist and poet of the late Edo period. His names were Korekiyo, Haruomi, Hirotari, commonly known as Kataro, Taro, and pen names Kashizono and Tao. He was the son of Nakajima Korenori, a samurai of the Kumamoto domain. As a samurai, he served as a guard and a page, but retired early in Bunka 12 (1815) and studied Japanese classics in the style of Motoori Norinaga under the guidance of Nagase Masayuki, a Japanese classicist from Kumamoto. He asked Motoori Ohira to correct the manuscripts of his poems. He later went to Nagasaki, where he had connections with the priests of Suwa Shrine, and was praised alongside Aoki Eisho and Kondo Mitsusuke, and made an effort to train Japanese classicists in the area. In his later years, he also went to Osaka, where he associated with Japanese classicists and poets from all over western Japan. In Bunkyū 1 (1861), he became a Japanese classics instructor at the domain school Jishukan. His many books, including Kotoba no Yatsumuki, which revised and revised the works of his predecessors as Japanese classical scholars, are included in the Complete Works of Nakajima Hirotari, and many of his handwritten manuscripts have been entrusted to the Nagasaki Prefectural Library. 江戸後期の国学者,歌人。名は惟清,春臣,広足,通称嘉太郎,太郎,号橿園,田翁など。熊本藩士中島惟規の子。藩士としては御番方,御小姓などを勤めたが文化12(1815)年早々と隠居し,同じ熊本の国学者長瀬真幸の指導のもと,本居宣長系統の国学を修める。本居大平には歌稿の添削を仰ぐ。のち長崎に出て諏訪神社の神官達と交流を持ち,青木永章,近藤光輔と並び称せられ,同地の国学者育成に尽力。晩年は大坂にも進出し,西日本各地の国学者,歌人と交際した。文久1(1861)年には藩校時習館の国学師範となる。著書は国学者の先達の業績を補訂した『詞の八衢補遺』以下数多く,『中島広足全集』に収められているほか,長崎県立図書館に自筆稿本類が多数寄託されている。ほかに『橿園集』『橿園文集』などもある。<参考文献>弥富破摩雄『中島広足』,白石良夫「中島広足往来抄」1~7(『文献探究』2・4~8・16号)
