An aquatic earthworm of the Oligochaeta class of the phylum Annelida and the Tubifex family. It is so named because it has thread-like gills at the end of its body. It has about 120 body segments. Its body length is usually 60-80 millimeters, but some individuals can reach twice that size. It is pale pink or pale purple in color. It is often found in rice paddies and ponds, and like Tubifex worms, it hides the front half of its body in the mud and brings the part with the gills out of the water and shakes it around. It is widely distributed throughout the world, probably because it can tolerate both high and low temperatures. There is only one known species of gill worm in the world.
