Ephoros (English spelling)
[Born] 405 BC. Aeolis, Cyme
[Died] 330 BCE
An ancient Greek historian, said to be a disciple of Isocrates. He wrote the Historiai (30 books), which covers the history of the world from the return of the descendants of Hercules to the Peloponnese to the siege of Perinthus by Philip II of Macedonia (340 BC). He was the first historian to divide history into several volumes and to write a preface to each volume, and he treated history by subject rather than as a chronology. His works were later used extensively by Diodorus Sicilus and Strabo, and were also used as historical sources by Plutarch and others.

In ancient Greece, the Dorian state had a governor. The Spartan ephors were the most famous, and five were elected annually by the citizens. They combined administrative, judicial, and moral education powers, and by the 5th century BC had become the highest office in the state. They oversaw the actions of the two kings and the various officials, as well as the administration of the assembly (ekklesia) and the council of elders.
