A general term for mites that live underwater and belong to the Arthropoda phylum, Arachnida class, and Acari order. They come in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, reddish brown, green, and colorless, with body lengths of 0.3-2.2 mm. They have long hairs on their third and fourth legs, which they use to swim skillfully. They live in rivers, lakes, and springs, preying on other insects, but many live in the air as larvae, parasitizing dragonflies, midges, and water striders. Over a hundred species are known to exist in Japan. [Aoki Junichi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
