Nishiokoppe [village] - Nishiokoppe

Japanese: 西興部[村] - にしおこっぺ
Nishiokoppe [village] - Nishiokoppe
A town in Monbetsu County, Abashiri Subprefecture, northern Hokkaido. Population 1,253 (1995). Located in the Kitami Mountains, most of the area is mountainous. People from Nagano Prefecture settled in 1904, but full-scale development did not begin until 1921, when the Nayoro Main Line (now abandoned) was opened along the Okoppe River. A small amount of farmland opens up on the narrow slopes of the Okoppe River and Mokoppe River. After World War II, there was a shift from field crops to dairy farming, which is now the main industry. Mt. Uenshiri (1,142m) at the southwestern end is known for its flower fields and magnificent views of the Kitami Mountains and the Sea of Okhotsk, and on the mountainside there is a scenic ice tunnel carved out of the perennial snow by the Mokoppe River.
