A coeducational national university in Padua, Italy. Founded in 1222, it has the second longest history after the University of Bologna. Many of its professors have been famous philosophers, humanists, and scientists, including Galileo, whose portraits are preserved in the art museum, which is closely associated with the university. The university's botanical garden, established in 1545, is the oldest in Europe. There are faculties of law, political science, statistics, philosophy and literature, education, medicine, science, pharmacy, engineering, and agriculture.
