Bigeye tuna (English spelling)

Japanese: メバチ(目撥) - メバチ（英語表記）bigeye tuna

A marine fish of the Scombridae family in the Perciformes order. Its name comes from its large, wide eyes. Its English name is the same. It is also called bachi for short, and small fish are also called daruma because of their round bodies. It is found in tropical and temperate zones all over the world, and is the tuna species that has the strongest offshore tendency. It reaches a body length (fork length) of 2m and a weight of 200kg. Adults are obese, and are characterized by relatively large heads and eyes. In the Pacific Ocean, the center of fish distribution is concentrated in the eastern part, and they migrate north and south to spawn and feed seasonally. Sexual maturity begins in the latter half of the second year of life, when the body length is about 100cm.

スズキ目サバ科の海産魚。眼がぱっちり大きなことに由来した名称。英名も同様。略してバチともいわれ，また小型魚は魚体が丸いのでダルマともいわれる。全世界の熱帯から温帯に分布し，マグロ類中もっとも沖合性が強い。体長(尾叉長)2m，体重200kgに達する。成体は肥満型で，頭と眼が相対的に大きいことが特徴。太平洋では魚群分布の中心は東部に偏在し，また季節的には南北方向に産卵･索餌回遊を行う。性成熟は2歳の後期，体長100cmほどから始まる。
