[Pre-Islamic Arabs]
According to the ethnic traditions of the Arabs themselves, recorded in the 8th and 9th centuries, the Arabs are divided into (1) the lost Arabs (Arab al-Ba'ida), (2) the true Arabs (Arab al-'Aribah), and (3) the Arabized Arabs (Arab al-Mustariba). (1) refers to the Ad and Thamud tribes, which the Quran states were wiped out by God, (2) is the southern Arab tribe, also called the Yaman tribe, whose ancestor was Qaftan, and (3) is the northern Arab tribe, also called the Qays tribe, whose ancestor was Adnan. In the Arab genealogy compiled later, Qaftan is identified with Joktan in Genesis 10:25 and following, and Adnan is said to be a descendant of Abraham's son Ishmael.
