Mizuhiki crab (Mizuhiki crab) - Mizuhiki crab (English name) Eplumula phalangium

Mizuhiki crab (Mizuhiki crab) - Mizuhiki crab (English name) Eplumula phalangium
A decapod crustacean of the family Polytrichum. Its carapace is pear-shaped and about 1.5 cm long, but its ambulatory legs are extremely long and tubular, reaching over 15 cm when spread apart. Its long, red ambulatory legs resemble the mizuhiki string used to wrap gift envelopes, hence its name. Its rostrum is deer antler-like and has two small branches. The last pair of legs is much shorter than the first three pairs of ambulatory legs and is positioned toward the back, and is used for balance when walking. The phalanges and pronodes form incomplete pincers, which can sometimes hold pieces of seaweed in place.
