A village in Kuma County in the southeastern part of Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 2,919 (1995). It is located in the upper reaches of the Kuma River in the center of the Kyushu Mountains, with the prefecture's highest peak, Mt. Ichifusa (1,722m), towering over the border with Miyazaki Prefecture. The Kuma River flows south through the center of the village, and the multipurpose dam, Ichifusa Dam, is located at its confluence with the Yuyama River. The central settlement is Iwano, where National Route 388 passes. In addition to rice, tea, shiitake mushrooms, and chestnuts are cultivated, and livestock are raised, and the forests that occupy most of the village area produce high-quality timber. The area around Ichifusa Dam has been developed as Ichifusayama Prefectural Park, which has a campsite and cycling trails and is a famous spot for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. 熊本県南東部,球磨(くま)郡の村。人口2919(1995)。九州山地の中央部,球磨川の最上流域に位置し,県の最高峰市房山(1722m)が宮崎県境にそびえる。球磨川が村域中央を南流し,湯山川との合流点に多目的ダムの市房ダムがある。中心集落は国道388号線が通じる岩野。米作のほか茶,シイタケ,クリの栽培と畜産などが行われ,村域の大部分を占める山林から良材を産する。市房ダム周辺は市房山県立公園として整備され,キャンプ場,サイクリングコースもあり,桜,紅葉の名所となっている。
