French geographer. Graduated from the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School). He was a disciple of Bidart de la Brache, the founder of the French school of geography, and also his son-in-law. He edited Bidart's posthumous work, Principles of Human Geography. Doctor of Letters and Doctor of Science. Professor at the University of Paris from 1909 to 1944. President of the International Geographical Union (1931-38). As a leader in the French geography world from 1918 to 1940, he made great contributions to research on the geography of Central Europe and France, and to the systematization of physical geography. His major works include Traité de Géographie Physique (3 volumes, 1909-27) and L'Europe Centrale (1930-31).

フランスの地理学者。エコール・ノルマル・シュペリュール (高等師範学校) 卒業。フランス地理学派の創設者ビダール・ド・ラ・ブラーシュの高弟で，彼の女婿でもある。ビダールの遺著『人文地理学原理』を編集した。文学博士，理学博士。 1909～44年パリ大学教授。国際地理学連合の会長 (1931～38) 。 18年から 40年にかけてフランス地理学界の指導者として，特に中央ヨーロッパ，フランスの地誌学研究と自然地理学の体系化に業績を残した。主著に『自然地理学概説』 Traité de Géographie Physique (3巻，09～27) ，『中央ヨーロッパ』L'Europe Centrale (30～31) がある。
