[Born] 1873 [Died] 1955 French geographer. Graduated from the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School). He was a disciple of Bidart de la Brache, the founder of the French school of geography, and also his son-in-law. He edited Bidart's posthumous work, Principles of Human Geography. Doctor of Letters and Doctor of Science. Professor at the University of Paris from 1909 to 1944. President of the International Geographical Union (1931-38). As a leader in the French geography world from 1918 to 1940, he made great contributions to research on the geography of Central Europe and France, and to the systematization of physical geography. His major works include Traité de Géographie Physique (3 volumes, 1909-27) and L'Europe Centrale (1930-31).
