Environmental damage caused by high-temperature wastewater from cooling, distillation, and treatment. Cooling water from thermal power plants is discharged at an average temperature of 7.2°C or more, and it is said that it raises the temperature of seawater by more than 3°C over an area of several kilometers from the discharge point. This changes the marine environment, affects the growth of fish and shellfish, and can cause abnormal proliferation of certain organisms. The Water Pollution Prevention Law regulates high-temperature wastewater as a living environment item, but there are no specific standards yet. Thermal pollution is also caused by heat exhausted into the atmosphere, and it is known that cities themselves have become a kind of heat island. It has been reported that the amount of exhaust heat generated by the enormous energy use of heating and cooling, automobile driving, etc. is tens to hundreds of watts per ^square kilometer, while air pollutants and a lack of trees hinder cooling, and it is said that the temperature inside cities is about 3°C higher than in the suburbs.

冷却，蒸留，処理水などの高温排水による環境被害。火力発電所の冷却水などは平均 7.2℃以上温度が上昇されて排出され，排出口から数 kmの広さにわたり3℃以上も海水の温度を上げるといわれる。このため海の環境を変化させ，魚介類の成育に影響を与え，特定の生物を異常増殖させることがある。高温排水に対しては水質汚濁防止法で，生活環境にかかわる規制項目としているが，具体的な基準はまだない。熱汚染は大気中への排熱によっても引起され，都市そのものが一種のヒート・アイランド化していることがわかっている。暖冷房，自動車走行など膨大なエネルギー使用により発生する排熱量が，1km²あたり数十～数百ワットとの報告もあり，一方，大気汚染物質や樹木の不足などが冷却を妨げて，都市内部が郊外に比較して3℃ほども気温が上昇しているとされる。
