He was born as a farmer's son near the small city of Digne in southern France, and became the rector of the church there and a professor of mathematics at the Royal Institute of Paris (now the Collège de France) before dying in Paris. In 1624 he published his first work, Paradoxical Treatise Against Aristotle's Students, in which he attacked Aristotelian philosophy from a skeptical standpoint.
