The name olefin, which has been used since ancient times, comes from the Latin "oleum-producing substance" because gaseous alkenes react with chlorine to produce oily substances (ethylene C 2 H 4 was once called olefiant gas). Two of the carbon atoms that make up the skeleton are connected by double bonds, but all other carbon-carbon bonds are single bonds. ...
