Uji River

A midstream river in the Yodo River system. The Seta River, which flows down from Lake Biwa, is called the Uji River downstream from the Araiseki Weir in Nango, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. The Uji River flows in a U-shaped course through the Daigo Mountains, which are the border between Kyoto Prefecture and Shiga Prefecture, and is called the Uji River Line because of its beautiful gorges. It flows west from Uji City through the Kyoto Basin, and merges with the Katsura River and Kizu River in Oyamazaki Town, on the border with Osaka Prefecture, to form the Yodo River. In 1964 (Showa 39), the Amagase Dam was built in Amagase, Uji City. It is a multipurpose dam with a levee height of 73 meters and a length of 254 meters, and is used for hydroelectric power generation and flood control. In 1970, the Kisenyama Dam and underground power plant were completed on the slope of Mt. Kisenyama on the upstream right bank, which pumps water from the Uji River. In addition, the water level of the Amagase Dam has risen along the 12.2 km stretch of the Uji River line from Amagase to Tonohata in Otsu City, creating a long, artificial lake, adding to the scenic beauty of the area, especially the fresh greenery in early summer and the colorful foliage in autumn. A motorway has been opened along the coast.

In the summer, cormorant fishing is held near Tonoshima Island on the sandbar in front of Byodo-in Temple in Uji City. This area is also a crossing point for the Uji River, and was the site of many battles during the Jisho, Juei, Jokyu, and Kenmu eras. The story of the battle for the vanguard between Sasaki Takatsuna and Kajiwara Kagesue (1184) is well known.

淀(よど)川水系中流の河川。琵琶湖(びわこ)から流下する瀬田川は、滋賀県大津市南郷の洗堰(あらいぜき)から下流を宇治川という。宇治川は京都府と滋賀県の境にあたる醍醐(だいご)山地を、くの字形の流路をとって流れるが、峡谷美に富むため、宇治川ラインとよばれる。宇治市から京都盆地を西流して、大阪府との境の大山崎町で桂(かつら)川、木津(きづ)川と合流して淀川となる。1964年（昭和39）に宇治市の天ヶ瀬(あまがせ)に天ヶ瀬ダムが建設された。堤高73メートル、長さ254メートル、水力発電、洪水調節などの多目的ダムである。1970年には上流右岸の喜撰山(きせんやま)山腹に、宇治川からの揚水による喜撰山ダムと地下発電所が完工した。また宇治川ラインの天ヶ瀬から大津市外畑までの12.2キロメートルの間は、天ヶ瀬ダムによって水位が上昇して長大な人工湖となり、いっそう風光美を加え、ことに初夏の新緑、秋の紅葉が美しい。沿岸には自動車道が開通した。

　なお、宇治市の平等院(びょうどういん)前の中州の塔の島付近では夏に鵜飼(うかい)が行われる。またこのあたりは宇治川の渡河地点として、治承(じしょう)、寿永(じゅえい)、承久(じょうきゅう)、建武(けんむ)などの宇治川の戦いの古戦場となった所で、佐々木高綱(たかつな)と梶原景季(かじわらかげすえ)の先陣争い（1184）の物語は有名である。
