She is said to have founded Carthage and was also incorporated into Roman legends. She was a princess of Tyre in Phoenicia, also known as Elissa. After her husband was killed by her brother Pygmalion, who succeeded her father, she fled to Africa, where she was promised land by the natives, the size of which was the size of a single cowhide, and by cutting the hide into strips, she acquired a vast territory, founded Carthage, and became its ruler. In the old version of the legend, she was proposed to by the local king, and to remain faithful to her first husband, she built a pile of wood and burned herself to death on it.
