The idea that companion animals are members of the family has taken root in society, and the word "feed" is no longer used to refer to the food of such animals. Pet food, or food, is commonly used. Pet food is researched and developed based on the nutritional science of each animal species, and contributes greatly to extending the lifespan of animals. The difference between regular food and pet food is that pet food provides a certain amount of nutritional components, whereas food is simply food. Animals cannot eat their meals with nutritional balance in mind, and have no choice but to eat what is given to them at home. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare food that contains a certain amount of stable nutritional components in advance. In Japan, the Pet Food Industry Association and the Pet Food Fair Trade Council provide guidance to manufacturers and retailers on nutritional standards and testing standards that are in line with global standards. Pet food is called complete nutritional food (food that meets the necessary nutritional standards and can be given as the main daily meal to maintain health), snacks, general food, nutritional supplements, and special therapeutic food. Special therapeutic food is sold only at veterinary clinics and is used as part of the treatment of various diseases under the direction of a veterinarian.
