In the general sense, clothing regulations, such as uniforms for guilds and schools, and formal attire for ceremonies and at the Imperial Court, exist in both the East and the West and throughout history. However, when we look at Europe, the relationship between clothing and the class system became more strongly recognized, and clothing in everyday life became subject to detailed regulations mainly during the 14th to 18th centuries, when the medieval class system began to loosen. These regulations are usually at the heart of the various laws collectively known as sumptuary laws. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
