...In the spring of 1456 (Kōsei 2), a Japanese person stabbed an Ainu youth to death in the blacksmith village of Shinori (now Shinori-cho, Hakodate City) near Hakodate, which developed into a major Ainu uprising led by the eastern Ainu chief Koshamain in the following year (Choroku 1). As a result of this uprising, the castles of the small Japanese clans that had been built at the southern tip of the Oshima Peninsula and fought for supremacy at that time fell one after another, leaving only two castles remaining: Shimonokunimasa's Shigebekku (now Moheji, Kamiiso-cho) and Kakizaki Sueshige's Hanazawa Castle (now Kaminokuni, Kaminokuni-cho). However, Takeda Nobuhiro (the ancestor of the Matsumae clan), who was under Kakizaki Sueshige, the lord of Hanazawa Castle, led a counterattack by the Japanese troops and finally shot and killed Koshamain and his son, which rapidly weakened the power of the Ainu forces and led to their suppression. There are many unknowns about the circumstances of the uprising and the behavior of the Japanese, but the advance of the Japanese into Ezo intensified conflict with the Ainu people, eventually resulting in a major ethnic counterattack. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Kakizaki Toshiharu" is listed below.
