The ruins of an ancient city in northern Syria. Its current name is Hama. Located in the Orontes (Ash) River basin, it was a key transportation hub and developed as a city during the Bronze Age under the influence of the Hittite Empire. From around 1200 BC, the Aramaeans and the Hittites of the New Kingdom established local dynasties there. Hittite hieroglyphic inscriptions left by the latter indicate the southernmost extent of their rule. During the time of the unified Kingdom of Israel, it is believed to have been under the rule of David and Solomon, but later became independent and resisted the Assyrian army advancing westward.
