A town house that received a grant

Japanese:
A town house that received a grant
In Edo, lower-ranking shogunate retainers, such as vassals, were allowed to build tenements within the bestowed mansions given to them, have townspeople live there, and collect rent. During the Kanbun to Genroku period (1661-1704), there were many applications to build town houses on the bestowed land given to lower-ranking shogunate retainers, such as the armored police officers, black hoemen, shogunate personnel, storehouse officers, Iga people, and cleaners, which were given to them as a group. The rice allowance given to these lower-ranking shogunate retainers was not enough to support their livelihood, so the shogunate had no choice but to allow the conversion of the bestowed land into town houses.
