Wild pea (Dumasia truncata Sieb.et Zucc.)
A perennial climbing plant of the legume family found on mountain forest edges (illustration). The leaves are alternate on the stem, compound with 3 leaflets and stipules at the base. The leaflets are thin and glabrous on the upper surface, while the underside is greenish-white with sparse short hairs that lie down. The terminal leaflet is oblong, 3-15 cm long and 2-6 cm wide. The flowers are pale yellow, butterfly-shaped, 15-20 mm long, and bloom in August and September in clusters growing from the leaf axils. The calyx lobes are barely noticeable. The fruit is glabrous, 4-5 cm long, dark purple when ripe, and contains 3-5 seeds.

山地の林縁などにみられるマメ科のつる性多年草(イラスト)。葉は茎に互生し,3小葉をもつ複葉で基部に托葉がある。小葉は薄質で,表面は無毛,裏面は緑白色でまばらに伏した短毛が生える。頂小葉は長卵形で長さ3~15cm,幅2~6cm。花は淡黄色の蝶形花で,長さ15~20mm,8~9月に葉腋(ようえき)から伸びる穂に集まって咲く。萼の裂片はほとんど目立たない。果実は無毛,長さ4~5cm,熟すと濃紫色となり,3~5個の種子を入れる。
