An industrial city in the northern part of North Carolina, USA. Population 196,000 (1994). Located in the Piedmont industrial area, it produces textiles, fabrics, tobacco, electrical machinery, and pharmaceuticals. It is the second largest city in the state and is also the financial, insurance, and distribution center for the surrounding area. It is home to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro College, Guilford College, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University, and Bennett College.
