Ninoshima Island

An island in Hiroshima Bay in the west of Hiroshima Prefecture. It is part of Minami Ward, Hiroshima City. Its area is 3.87 square kilometers. Aki Kofuji (278 meters) in the north of the island is the highest peak. Since the Meiji period, a quarantine station of the former army has been established on the island, and in August 1945 (Showa 20), it housed about 10,000 victims of the atomic bomb. In 1946, the Hiroshima Prefectural War Children's Education Center Ninojima Gakuen was established. A ferry runs to Hiroshima (Ujina) Port, and many people commute to Hiroshima City for work or school. On the island, mandarin oranges and vegetables are grown, and oysters and seaweed are cultivated, and there are many gravel transport ships. The Aki Kofuji area is part of the Setonaikai National Park, and there are many recreational facilities on the island, such as the Youth Nature Center. Population 1,248 (2000).
