Nakanoin Michikatsu - Nakanoin Michikatsu

Japanese: 中院通勝 - なかのいんみちかつ
Nakanoin Michikatsu - Nakanoin Michikatsu

A poet and classical scholar from the Azuchi-Momoyama period. His childhood name was Matsuyashamaro. In 1586 (Tensho 14), he shaved his head and adopted the name Yasokuken. His father was Michitame, his great-grandfather was Michihide, a poet from the Bunmei period (1469-1487), and his maternal grandfather was Sanjonishikineda, a classical scholar. In 1580, he was punished by imperial pardon from Emperor Ogimachi and fled to Tango (Kyoto Prefecture), where he remained for 19 years until he was pardoned and returned to Kyoto. At that time, he struck up a friendship with Hosokawa Yuusai, who had entered Tango Tanabe Castle, and received instruction from him in the Kokin Denju (an ancient text), and, having long expressed a desire to compile various commentaries on the Tale of Genji, Michikatsu worked hard for over ten years and completed the enormous 55-volume Min'e Nisso (A Journey to Min'e Nisso) in 1698 (Keicho 3). After returning to Kyoto, he was welcomed into the poetry world, and in addition to composing many poems such as the Michikatsu Collection, he also wrote linked verse and studied the classics.
