Inagaki [village] - Inagaki

Japanese: 稲垣[村] - いながき
Inagaki [village] - Inagaki
A village in Nishitsugaru County, western Aomori Prefecture. Population: 5,412 (1995). Located in the northern part of the Tsugaru Plain, on the west bank of the Iwaki River, nearly 75% of the land is cultivated. Before the early modern period, most of the area was low-lying marshland covered with reeds, but in 1681 (Tenwa 1), a development project directly managed by the Tsugaru Domain was carried out, and by around 1698 (Genroku 11), almost the entire village area had been developed. However, the village continued to suffer frequent floods and cold damage after that, and was abandoned and rebuilt several times. Large-scale river improvement work was carried out on the Iwaki River in 1918 and the Yamada River in 1927, and the national Nishitsugaru District Irrigation and Drainage Project was carried out from 1934 to 1968, making the village one of the leading rice-producing areas in the prefecture.
