A village in Aso County in northern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 5,287 (1995). The eastern area is a gentle plateau on the western slope of Mt. Aso's central crater cone, and the northwestern area is dominated by the outer rim of the volcano. The Shirakawa River, which flows northwest through the crater floor, and the Kurokawa River, which flows south, join near Tateno in the west, then cut through the outer rim and flow west. The Toyohashi Main Line runs along the Kurokawa River, and the Minamiaso Railway runs along the Shirakawa River. The village has four hot springs - Tochigi, Yunotani, Tarutama, and Jigoku - as well as a golf course and a national lodging facility, making it a popular destination for tourists and those seeking therapeutic baths.
