...He was from a film family: actor Pierre R. (1885-1952) was his older brother, producer Claude R. (1901- ) was his younger brother, and cinematographer Claude R. (1914- ) was his nephew (Pierre's eldest son). He married Catherine Herselin, who had been a model for his father's paintings, and began making films to turn her into an actress. He gained attention with his silent films, from a kind of avant-garde film that played with "cinematic tricks" (The Water Maiden, 1924) to Nana (1926), which was strongly influenced by the "naturalistic realism" of Erich von Stroheim's The Foolish Wife (1921). In the talkie era, he made a number of masterpieces that remain in the history of cinema, from The Bitch (1931) to The Lower Depths (1936) to The Rules of the Game (1939). He became one of the leading masters of prewar French cinema, which film historian Georges Sadoul named "realism poétique." He is also sometimes called one of the "four great masters of prewar French cinema," along with Marcel Carné, Julien Duvivier, and Jacques Feydel (or Rene Clair). …
