A representative German theater located in the center of Berlin. Founded in 1883, it led the way in naturalistic theater under director Bluhm, and from 1905 gained worldwide fame for its innovative Shakespeare and modern theater directed by Reinhardt. It has a small theater called a chamber theater, and its size and facilities influenced the history of modern theater in Japan, as it was the model for the Tsukiji Small Theater that opened in 1924 (Taisho 13). After World War II, when Berlin was divided into East and West, it was the most important theater in East Berlin and continued to lead the theater of the former East Germany (German Democratic Republic) with a program based on realism, from classical to modern plays. After German reunification, it has regained its former fame as a representative theater in Berlin, which became the new capital of Germany.
