Torajiro Tsukamoto - Torajiro Tsukamoto

A non-church Christian evangelist. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1885. He became a student of Kanzo Uchimura while studying at Tokyo Imperial University, and after working at the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, he became an independent evangelist in 1919 (Taisho 8). He clashed with Uchimura due to his harsh criticism of the church, and broke off relations with him, but after Uchimura's death, he became a leading figure in the non-church movement. He published a monthly magazine called "Scripture Knowledge," and his Bible lectures, in which he made full use of his vast linguistic knowledge, attracted many young people. He advocated a strict separation of faith and the secular world, but on the other hand, he advocated a Japanese Christianity and took a patriotic stance during the Pacific War. His main works include "Ichiban: A List of Differences in the Gospels" (1951) and his translation of "The Gospels" (1963).

無教会主義キリスト教の伝道者。明治18年福岡県に生まれる。東京帝国大学時代に内村鑑三(うちむらかんぞう)門下となり、農商務省勤務を経て、1919年（大正8）独立伝道者となる。あまりに激しい教会批判が原因で内村と衝突し決別したが、内村亡きあとは無教会主義運動の代表的人物となった。個人月刊誌『聖書知識』を発行し、豊富な語学知識を駆使した聖書講義は多くの青年を集めた。信仰と世俗の峻厳(しゅんげん)な分離を主張したが、反面、日本的キリスト教を標榜(ひょうぼう)し、太平洋戦争に際しては愛国的立場をとった。主著に『福音書(ふくいんしょ)異同一覧』（1951）、訳書に『福音書』（1963）がある。
