Formerly known as Alexandreta, Alexandreta is a port city in south-central Turkey and the capital of the province of the same name. It is located on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Iskenderun facing the Mediterranean Sea, and was the starting point of the inland trade route to India and Iran until the opening of the Suez Canal (1869). It was a port in the Aleppo region of the Ottoman Empire, but was under French mandate from 1918 to 1937. After the city was returned to Turkey, the port facilities were improved, it became a base for the Turkish Navy, and it developed rapidly with the establishment of an industry, mainly chemical fertilizers. It is connected by air to Adana, Ankara, and Istanbul. Population: 154,807 (1990).
