A classification term for Noh plays. Unlike Mugen Noh, in which ghosts appear, this type of Noh plays a real, living person. As a rule, the shite plays the role of a male warrior with his face uncovered, and either performs a male dance or a battle scene called Kirikumi. These include "Ataka," "Kosode Soga," "Kogo," "Yachi Soga," "Hashi Benkei," and "Tadanobu." Generally, it has come to be interpreted literally in a broad sense, and includes plays such as "Kumano," "Jigen Koji," "Shunkan," and "Yoroboshi." It is the fourth piece performed in a five-piece program, and is a type of so-called "fourth piece" (→ miscellaneous piece).

能の曲の分類用語。幽霊の登場する夢幻能に対し，主人公 (シテ) が現実に生きた人物として登場する能。シテが直面 (ひためん) ，すなわち素顔の男性の武人役で，男舞を舞うか，斬組 (きりくみ) といわれる戦い場を演じるのを原則とする。『安宅』『小袖曾我』『小督 (こごう) 』『夜討曾我』『橋弁慶』『忠信』など。一般に字義どおり広い意味に解されるようになり，『熊野』『自然居士』『俊寛』『弱法師 (よろぼし) 』などの類をもいう。五番立の番組で，4番目に演じられる，いわゆる四番目物 (→雑物 ) の一種。
