This is a record of important events in the life of Zonkaku, the son of Kakunyo, the third head priest of Honganji Temple. The original title was "Jorakudaishu Yuro no Ichigoki" (Record of the First Life of the Master of Jorakudai), named after Zonkaku's role as the abbot of Jorakudai. The version that exists today is a copy of an abridgement written by Kensei, the grandson of Rennyo, the eighth head priest of Honganji Temple, during the Daiei era (1521-28). According to Kensei's colophon, the accounts up to the age of 72 were transcribed by Zonkaku's son Kogen, and the accounts after that were added by Kogen. The original was burned during the Kyoroku era (1528-32). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
