Also known as the Ambon Incident. After the establishment of the Dutch East India Company, competition with Britain over the spice trade intensified, but in 1623, Dutch authorities arrested about 50 people, including all British citizens and nine Japanese mercenaries, on Ambon Island in eastern Indonesia, accusing them of conspiring to occupy a Dutch fortress, tortured them, and executed 20 of them. The Dutch paid indemnity in 1654, but the matter was finally resolved with the Treaty of Breda in 1667. After the incident, Britain withdrew from Indonesia and focused on expanding into India.
