In February 1945, toward the end of the Pacific War, 61,000 troops from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions of the U.S. Army attacked Iwo Jima (south of the Ogasawara Islands), which was being defended by 21,000 Army and Navy troops under the command of Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi. The landing began on the 19th, and after about a month of fierce fighting, on March 26, the remaining 800 soldiers charged and were killed in battle, resulting in the annihilation of the Japanese army. Casualties among the U.S. troops were also heavy, totaling 29,000 dead and wounded. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
