Generally, it refers to Spain from the 16th century to the first half of the 17th century, when the country dominated Europe, America, and Asia, and was on a par with the great powers of Western Europe. From the perspective of cultural history, this period is called the Golden Age of Spain, Siglo de Oro. The term "Spanish Empire" was created later, and the Spanish kings at the time commonly referred to their own territories as the Catholic Kingdom, Monarquía católica. Furthermore, if we interpret "empire" as the governance of lands and their inhabitants outside of the Spanish Empire's own territory, the "Spanish Empire" lasted until 1898.
